Oprah Decides To Sell ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ Longtime Home
Oprah Winfrey is selling Harpo Studios to Chicago Developer in a sale-leaseback deal that would keep the studio at the site for the next two years.
Now signing off
“We have entered into a purchasing agreement with Sterling Bay for the four-building Harpo Studios campus in Chicago’s West Loop,” Harpo said in a statement. “We expect the transaction to be closed in 30 days. The property will be leased back to Harpo for two years and the studio will continue to produce programming for OWN.”
The decision to sell the campus comes close after Winfrey signed off from her talk show in favor of launching the Los-Angeles based Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
End of an era
Since the talk show finished, Harpo has continued to have a presence at the campus, with workers producing content for OWN.
Winfrey filmed the “The Oprah Winfrey Show” at the studio from 1990 to 2011.
In 2011, previous Chicago Mayor Richard Daley decided to name the street outside Harpo Studios “Oprah Winfrey Way.”
