Barclays Accused Of ‘Dark Pool’ Fraud, To Face Legal Charges

New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, has filed civil fraud charges against Barclays over misleading “dark pool” trading operations.

‘Fraud and deceit’

Schneiderman says the British bank misrepresented the safety of its trading system to investors.

“The facts alleged in our complaint show that Barclays demonstrated a disturbing disregard for its investors in a systematic pattern of fraud and deceit,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “Barclays grew its dark pool by telling investors they were diving into safe waters. According to the lawsuit, Barclays’ dark pool was full of predators – there at Barclays’ invitation.”

False claims

Schneiderman claims Barclays had falsified marketing materials and misrepresented a service that purported to protect investors from predatory trading behavior.

New York state prosecutors said Barclays give clients “false statements.” The lawsuit seeks to make Barclays pay damages and forfeit the profits gained through its actions.

Meanwhile, Barclays said it is taking accusations “very seriously.”

The financial institution has been the subject of several investigations, fines, and settlements in recent years.

How to Prepare Your Child for Surgery

The thought of going to the hospital for an operation is frightening to any child. Younger ones might be scared of being separated from their parents in an unfamiliar building, while older children know enough about surgeries to be scared of scarring, loss of control, and even death. Parents meanwhile worry about complications during the surgery, or how a long hospital stay can affect their child.

Thankfully, there have been enormous improvements in medicine over the last few decades. Hospitals are now much more family friendly, usually allowing parents to stay with the child at all stages except for the operation itself, and the advancement of outpatient clinical anesthesia practices and surgery means that children can usually be back home in their own beds in less than a day.

However, children still need you to reassure them. Here are the common worries children have about surgeries, depending on their age, and how to comfort them.

Parent holding child's handInfants

Keep your baby’s routine the same on the days leading up to the operation to minimize stress. Inform the hospital staff when your child usually sleeps and eats, along with other habits. Bring your baby’s favorite security items, such as a toy or blanket. Keep calm and relaxed, and let them hear your voice and touch you.

Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers

Don’t keep the coming operation a secret, but use non-frightening language to describe what will happen on the day of the surgery. A simple “The doctor will fix your ears” will reassure your child better compared to refusing to tell them anything at all. There are also many children’s books and play sets that can help your child learn about hospitals and address their fears.

School age children

A very common fear of school age children is the thought of waking up during surgery and feeling pain. Comfort them by saying that they won’t wake up during the operation, and that when they open their eyes you will be right beside them. They might also think that feeling scared or crying is “babyish,” and will try to keep their emotions to themselves. Let them know that it’s alright for them to tell you how they feel.

Teenagers

Teens usually fear scarring, or a major change to their life. They feel a loss of control over themselves and their world. Be supportive, but don’t lie; false reassurances will only anger them. Letting them talk to the doctor and ask any question will give them a sense of control, and will clear any worries they might have. Encourage them to talk about their feelings with you or their friends.

While taking care of your child, make sure you care for yourself as well. If your child sees that you are losing sleep or feeling stressed, they might feel that it is their fault. Take breaks and eat well, and when necessary say no to some of your obligations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends.

Who’s Responsible for Promoting Workplace Safety?

People working in factories – big or small –stay in unusual environments and use complex machinery and tools like rotary table tailstock to finish the job. These can put anyone at risk, however, so the responsibility of workplace safety is high. To make sure that nobody gets hurt, the following should work together:

Pressure valveResponsibility of the State

Regardless of the factory’s location, the state should have workplace laws and regulations that’ll serve as a guide. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for instance, have passed acts and relevant laws that every employer should comply with. This way, nobody would be clueless when promoting safety in the workplace.

Responsibility as an Employer

Employers should promote good health and safety to everyone. They should improve security measures and provide the necessary tools or equipment that’ll protect and lighten their workers’ load. These include daily monitoring and maintenance, which guarantee that everything will be safe to use. Employers should conduct trainings beforehand to make sure that workers have an idea about their task. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is also important, as this will keep your worker’s healthy well-being.

Responsibility as a Worker

The employer shouldn’t take all the blame, as workers also have the responsibility to promote safety in the work area. They should follow all safety directions and instructions to reduce risks of accidents and other unforeseen circumstances. They shouldn’t ignore the reminders of their seniors and supervisors, so they won’t harm any of their co-workers. The workers should use the necessary PPE correctly, and listen attentively if there are orientation trainings regarding a new procedure or machinery.

The safety of any workplace is the responsibility of both employers and workers. Without their cooperation, every single project can put anyone at risk. This is why they need to follow certain rules and be aware of their surroundings to avoid unfortunate circumstances.

A Career in Makeup Artistry: Is It for You?

Professional Makeup ArtistShaping the eyebrows, applying foundation to shade the face, covering up dark rings and blemishes, and defining the eyes, cheeks, and lips—if only applying makeup were simple, women wouldn’t need to hire the services of professional makeup artists.

Makeup application, however, is an art. It takes a skilful hand and an artistic mind to come with up with a natural yet radiant look. While you can learn this art through practice and observation, MMA Troy, a training facility for aspiring makeup artists, says the best way to master it is by attending a makeup school or academy. The makeup industry offers great career opportunities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment for makeup artists will grow faster than the average for all other occupations through 2018.

Improving the Physical Appearance of Others

Makeup artists apply makeup to performing artists who work in front of the camera or a live audience. They use cosmetics to enhance how a person looks, accentuating their facial features and creating dynamic face illusions. They usually work in theatres, production sets for film and television, and independent salons.

The Work

As a professional makeup artist, your job is to create the look your client wants. This can include anything from something basic and natural to using hairpieces, wigs, and accessories for whatever reason. If you plan to work in the movie industry, you need to get trained on the proper application of prosthetics to create convincing looks.

Depending on where you plan to work, your tasks may include applying makeup to achieve your clients’ desired look, researching the latest makeup and hairstyles, changing a person’s look using prosthetics or special effects makeup, and standing by on set to re-do hair and makeup for artists.

Hours of Work and Income

Expect to work long and irregular hours, even during weekends and holidays. You may have to work early in the morning before filming starts or late in the evening for concerts, live TV shows, or theatre performances. Makeup artists are paid based on the hours worked. Rates depend on the company, person, or type of production.

If you love being creative and enjoy fashion, cosmetics, and hairdressing, makeup artistry could be the right career for you.

Natural Grass To Artificial Turf: 5 Reasons To Change

Artificial grass is no longer solely applicable for sports fields. It can be installed even in your own home, providing a low-maintenance garden grass, or an indoor fountain centrepiece. If you’re already maintaining a natural grass lawn, here are five reasons that can convince you to shift from natural grass to artificial turf:

Lawn Maintenance

turf suppliersMost turf suppliers in Brisbane offer low-maintenance artificial turf that can look vibrant even without fertilizing, mowing, watering, and receiving constant attention. You can get Empire Zoysia grass, for example, that is known for its dark emerald green leaf blade colour. This type of grass has a slow growth rate, and only requires 4 to 5 hours of sunlight—making it suitable for shady areas around the house.

Aesthetics

An artificial turf resembles the natural look of authentic grass. They stay green and free of weeds and chemicals year-round. Look for a trusted turf supplier that meets your requirements. Enquire if you can try installing Palmetto Buffalo grass—the most popular lawn grass in Australia—and have the best looking lawn in the neighbourhood without breaking a sweat.

Activities

You do not have to stop your kids and pets from playing in your front yard. Pets simply cannot chew or easily tear your turf—especially when most pets are not attracted to artificial grass lawns. You need not worry when your kids play on the turf since you don’t apply cleaning chemicals for lawn maintenance.

Costs

Without the need to mow the lawn, you do not need to buy expensive lawn mowers. You may also receive lower utility bills since you do not need to water and mow your garden, as opposed to real grass which usually consumes lots of water.

By installing artificial turf, you can save money and enjoy playing on your green lawn with your family and pets. Your artificial turf does not need annual replacement as it has a long lifespan. In fact, a number of independent long-term studies reveal that any landscaping investment yields returns of 100 to 200 percent.

Boost Email Privacy: Google To Test New Security Features

Google is working on updates to security features in Gmail in an attempt to shield emails from snooping and improve its users’ online privacy.

Ultimate security feature

search-engineKnown as “End-to-End” encryption, Google said emails that are encrypted are like sealed envelopes that are less vulnerable to spying.

To encourage more people to encrypt their email, Google released a source code intended at offering an extra layer of privacy protection.

The search engine giant is hoping its new service will make “end-to-end” encryption an easy option for its users.

Encrypting data

The move comes as Google voiced its support to oppose mass surveillance online.

So far, End-to-End is not yet available, but Google said the program is in a public testing phase.

“We recognize that this sort of encryption will probably only be used for very sensitive messages or by those who need added protection,” said Stephan Somogyi, a Google product manager who oversees security and privacy, in a blog post. “But we hope that the End-to-End extension will make it quicker and easier for people to get that extra layer of security should they need it.”

Guide to Visual Merchandising

Whether you’re managing a big box retail store or a pop-up shop, visual merchandising is important in attracting customers and getting sales in. Some owners and managers, however, are busy planning promos and sales events that they forget to create a place where they can feature their products effectively.

As an entrepreneur, remember that your retail space is your most effective “salesperson”. To increase revenue, you need to set the mood and learn the right way to display your merchandise.

Appeal to All Senses

StoreWhen designing a shop, remember that your customers have five senses. Don’t just think about your store’s visual appeal and focus on your shop decorations and fittings. You can increase sales by giving your customers a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. The music you play affects your customer’s moods. If you want them to take their time and look around longer, consider playing slow, mellow music. To attract teenagers and young adults, have a playlist of the latest hits.

How your store smell also affects the behaviour of your customers. Studies show that scents (and odours) affect people’s memories and emotions, two important factors that help customers choose one brand over another. Have a distinct scent for your store, so that when people smell that scent from somewhere else, they’ll remember you.

Remember the Rule of Three

Follow the Rule of Three when creating displays. Make it easier for customers to choose by providing them three options instead of one. For instance, when you have products in varying shades and sizes, consider featuring products by size and in different colours, as in tall, taller, tallest or dark, darker, darkest. Furthermore, help them spot bargains by displaying products according to their value: good, better and best.

Give Ideas

Don’t just put up items on shelves and racks. Many customers will buy a product once they’ve envisioned the way they’re going to use it. Give your customers ideas on how much fun they’ll have with your products through your display. When you’re selling accent pieces and home decors, set up your display in such a way that people can imagine the merchandise in their own homes.

Gaining loyal customers and increasing revenue don’t have to be difficult. When done properly, visual merchandising may be all you need to grow your business.
