You’re Undernourished: Signs of Nutrient Deficiency

nutrient deficiencyListening to the signals sent by your body is one of the best ways to make sure that you’re getting your daily nutritional needs. If you notice a change in your skin, nails, hair, or the way you feel, you may be falling short on providing your body the vitamins and minerals it needs.

Green Gold Nutrition shares a few signs of nutrient deficiency:

Weak Bones and Muscles

Strong muscles and bones are essential to feeling energized and healthy. If you frequently suffer from cramps and injuries from physical activities, you may be lacking certain vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, copper, and zinc.

Weak and Ridged Nails

Brittle or weak nails are a common indication of deficiency in zinc, a mineral needed for the proper functioning of the immune system. Zinc is also important for cell growth and division. If your nails appear thin with raised ridges, however, it may be a sign of iron deficiency anemia.

Tired All the Time

While feeling tired frequently is a natural reaction to poor diet or overwork, it can also signal certain illnesses and nutrient deficiency. Being tired all the time is also a sign that you lack vitamins B1, B3, B12, vitamin D, potassium or magnesium. Practicing good stress management and eating a healthy sugar-free diet helps combat signs of fatigue.

Skin Blemishes

Skin blemishes like acne and age spots are often caused by a deficiency in Vitamin A. This vitamin is important because it helps remove dead skin and reduces the likelihood of developing clogged pores. It is advisable to eat more green and leafy vegetables for more Vitamin A.

Lack of Appetite

According to experts, chronic lack of appetite signals nutritional deficiency. If you suddenly find yourself skipping meals because you’re not hungry, you may have an iron deficiency. Make sure to alert your doctor if your appetite changes to address any nutritional problems.

Nutritional deficiencies can persist for a long time before showing signs of symptoms. Make sure to watch for these indicators and talk to your doctor about it. Develop a healthy and balanced diet and purchase multivitamins or nutritional supplements recommended by your physician.

Don’t Let These 5 Things Ruin Your Antique Furniture

antique furnitureAntiques are a wonderful addition to any home. They add character, are a part of history, and are great conversation pieces when visitors are over. If they have been in your family for a long time, they likely hold fond memories. But they are also fragile and vulnerable, and many things can hurt their integrity, authenticity, and value.

Here are several factors that you must consider if you want to preserve your antique furniture:

1. Climate and Temperature – Many antiques are made of wood, so they are susceptible to changes in temperature and moisture. Before you move your furniture to a different room, make sure to choose a good spot. Avoid heating vents, direct sunlight, or placing them in attics.

2. Improper Refinishing – Too many people try to do a refinishing job by themselves, and they end up ruining the antique. When it comes to refinishing or painting
antique furniture, less is more. If you believe that your piece would benefit from refinishing, ask for help from a professional.

3. Cleaning – Off the shelf cleaning materials will often do more harm than good, leaving behind a layer of wax and hydrocarbons. Cleaning truly valuable pieces can even be disastrous, as you may end up damaging the patina.

4. Pests – While intentionally damaging a centuries-old piece of furniture would be unthinkable for humans, insects only see it as food. Wood boring pests will have a massive detrimental effect on your antique’s value, structure, and long term preservation. If you think you have an infestation in your home, contact an extermination service, such as edgepestcontrol.com, immediately.

5. Pets – If you want to save your prized Chippendale piece from being damaged, you need to get a scratching post for your cat. Of course, it can be a challenge to encourage him to use the post over your antique, so make sure to place it in a visible and accessible place. Train your pet to use it, and try to limit their access to your antiques.

Great antiques, especially period furniture, need to be treated with care. Keep them in pristine condition by doing your research and using your best judgment.

Wipe Your Way to Working Better

Office desk with suppliesIt is the company’s job to make sure the workplace is a safe environment that prioritises each employee’s health. That said, management can only do so much. Having a healthy and productive work environment still rests primarily on the individual, and it all starts with the desk.

The organisation of your desk can determine how well you do your work. Once your company is done checking the vents and hiring health and safety consultants to confer with on the right furniture, your work space is your responsibility.

Some suggestions to make sure your little corner of the office helps you do better at work:

  1. Personalise your space. Putting up photographs or even decorative elements is not a sign of a lack of professionalism; it actually inspires and encourages you. For people who perform creative tasks for the company, decor can go a long way to spark ideas.
  2. Out of sight, out of mind. Keep unnecessary documents and items in a box you can still access readily but doesn’t take up space on your table top. Too much clutter will only stress you out and give the impression of unaccomplished tasks.
  3. Clean your virtual desktop. Your desk may be clutter-free but all the files on your work computer might be in disarray. Make sure you properly label all files and place them in neat folders you can access easily even without the search function. This saves you time you would otherwise spend looking for documents when you need them.
  4. Disinfect regularly. Don’t wait for weekly or monthly wipe downs by custodians. Get a head start on the cleaning by making sure your space is free from dust or food crumbs.

Your company can do a lot to make your stay comfortable and safe, but the little details are up to you. Treat your workstation with as much love and respect as you would your own personal space. Keep in mind, this is where you earn a living and spend most of your week days.

Three KPIs You Should Use to Improve Retail Asset Management

Retail asset management entails a deep understanding of the operations and efficient use of resources to maximise potential profits. Substandard practices would only compromise the end-results and may jeopardise your operations.

This is why when it comes to asset management, a good retail business owner needs to develop and monitor key performance indicators or KPI. As noted by experts, you can achieve this by setting strategic priorities and measuring progress from the initial processes to the latter stages of your operations.

According to business authorities like Mainpac.com.au and Forbes.com, there are many kinds of KPI that you can use to optimise your retail business. Take a look at the following ways to gauge the success of your asset management practices:

Store Portfolio Changes

You must have a complete control on the range of products or services your offer. As the retail business industry changes, however, you may have to update your store portfolio. Be it a small addition or a radical change to your inventory, having the right metrics and data allows you a clear overview of the recent trends in the industry. This will help you plan strategic changes to your operations to anticipate future market behaviour.

Expected Return on New Stores

If you are planning to expand your operations, you have to set certain goals to keep up with the growth. Creating points where you can monitor the return on new stores helps measure the effectiveness of your strategy. A study says that some factors like store location may have a certain influence to the success of your expansion project. A KPI that gauges such results will help you modify and streamline your operations.

Customer Satisfaction

Measuring the satisfaction rating of your customer allows you to make the necessary changes and meet the demands of your target market. In terms of asset management, you can improve the quality of your assets or experiment with new ones to satisfy your customers.

Managing retail assets takes foresight and quick response to market changes. By using a good set of KPIs, you will be able to apply the necessary actions and make the most of your operations.

Important Modifications for Boosting Road Performance of Older Trucks

Keeping trucks operational and functioning well on the road is a constant challenge for fleet managers. As regular maintenance is not enough to keep these vehicles running efficiently, it is still important to implement certain modifications.

Here are a few adjustments that can help your trucks run smoother and last longer:

Tire Pressure

Old trucksWhile buying good all-weather tires costs more money than it does for regular items, they increase safety on the road and reduce wear. The quality of your tires affects mileage as well, so it is important to check it often. This is a significant part of maintaining proper tire pressure. Second hand truck sellers like Pickles.com.au say that the right tire pressure maximises fuel efficiency and helps you identify small air leaks.

Helper Springs

It is important to check the suspension of your trucks to avoid excessive pressure on tires. Install metal springs or air springs to provide more support for the vehicle’s load. Air springs can also be adjusted to accommodate the load of the truck.

Air Filter

The exhaust system of older vehicles may be rusty or may need replacement. If you are facing the latter situation, it is better to purchase a high-flow exhaust system. A visual inspection of the exhaust system is necessary to identify other problems.

Spark Plugs

Check your spark plugs and look for signs of discolouration. Discoloured plugs may mean that the truck’s motor is lean or rich. If the truck is running lean, there is probably not enough fuel. If it’s running rich, however, it may be consuming too much fuel.

Electrical Grounds

Upgrade your vehicle’s electrical grounds to make sure that the electrical airflow sensors are in tune with the truck’s computer system. This preventative maintenance modification can be done by adding wires to increase the contact points.

Apart from these truck modifications, you can also maximise your truck’s efficiency by setting fuel goals and improving the truck’s aerodynamics. Maintain regular preventative maintenance checks and reports, and operate at a speed that maximises your truck’s fuel economy.

Is Your Small Business Struggling? Here’s What You Should Do

Nothing is more frustrating for an entrepreneur than to see their business, which they put countless hours of effort into, struggle to survive. It’s a statistical fact that more small businesses in Utah fail than succeed, but why? Many of them have difficulty with the same issues, and make the same mistakes.

Here are several things you can improve on.

Finance

Man's hand holding a calculatorMost small businesses have financial troubles. Expenses seem sky high, taxes are choking you, and you’re not entirely sure where your money is going. Unfortunately, this is a very common problem, and many owners try to tackle it by themselves.

Your time is better spent selling to customers and managing your business; leave the sorting out of your balance sheets to pros. Hire an experienced Utah accountant; the best ones can process your payroll, give you expert advice, help you save on taxes, and generally work miracles for a struggling business.

Employees

It’s difficult to find the right people, and even harder to get them to work for you. Big corporations offer benefits you just can’t compete with, and as a result you might be tempted to settle for whoever will work for you. But a bad hire can easily cripple your organization, so what should you do?

Instead of looking for the perfect candidate, try to find raw talent that can be trained. Choose people who are easy to work with and have the right attitude. From the very beginning, decide what organizational culture you want to have, and hire people that fit in with that vision.

One other thing you should note about employees: be very, very careful about hiring friends or family. They might not take you seriously, money discussions will be awkward, and they’re almost impossible to fire. Only do so if you’re prepared for the risks and if you have no other option.

Marketing

When it comes to marketing, you need to deliver a clear and consistent message. If your print ads give off a completely different impression from your website, it raises doubts for prospective customers: “Is this really the same company? Are they being honest?” Make it clear what your business offers and what it does better than the competition, then tell customers in a way that leaves no room for guessing.

And do you constantly suffer from zigzagging periods of activity? Perhaps you neglect your marketing duties when business is high. Keep up your sales efforts even when you have plenty of clients, and you shouldn’t run out of prospects.

Simply working hard isn’t enough for a business to succeed. Fortunately, we live in an age of free and unlimited information. Keep learning and ask advice from experts about your challenges.

Barclays Accused Of ‘Dark Pool’ Fraud, To Face Legal Charges

Barclays,_Albion_Street,_Leeds

New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, has filed civil fraud charges against Barclays over misleading “dark pool” trading operations.

‘Fraud and deceit’

Schneiderman says the British bank misrepresented the safety of its trading system to investors.

“The facts alleged in our complaint show that Barclays demonstrated a disturbing disregard for its investors in a systematic pattern of fraud and deceit,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “Barclays grew its dark pool by telling investors they were diving into safe waters. According to the lawsuit, Barclays’ dark pool was full of predators – there at Barclays’ invitation.”

False claims

Schneiderman claims Barclays had falsified marketing materials and misrepresented a service that purported to protect investors from predatory trading behavior.

New York state prosecutors said Barclays give clients “false statements.” The lawsuit seeks to make Barclays pay damages and forfeit the profits gained through its actions.

Meanwhile, Barclays said it is taking accusations “very seriously.”

The financial institution has been the subject of several investigations, fines, and settlements in recent years.

How to Prepare Your Child for Surgery

The thought of going to the hospital for an operation is frightening to any child. Younger ones might be scared of being separated from their parents in an unfamiliar building, while older children know enough about surgeries to be scared of scarring, loss of control, and even death. Parents meanwhile worry about complications during the surgery, or how a long hospital stay can affect their child.

Thankfully, there have been enormous improvements in medicine over the last few decades. Hospitals are now much more family friendly, usually allowing parents to stay with the child at all stages except for the operation itself, and the advancement of outpatient clinical anesthesia practices and surgery means that children can usually be back home in their own beds in less than a day.

However, children still need you to reassure them. Here are the common worries children have about surgeries, depending on their age, and how to comfort them.

Parent holding child's handInfants

Keep your baby’s routine the same on the days leading up to the operation to minimize stress. Inform the hospital staff when your child usually sleeps and eats, along with other habits. Bring your baby’s favorite security items, such as a toy or blanket. Keep calm and relaxed, and let them hear your voice and touch you.

Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers

Don’t keep the coming operation a secret, but use non-frightening language to describe what will happen on the day of the surgery. A simple “The doctor will fix your ears” will reassure your child better compared to refusing to tell them anything at all. There are also many children’s books and play sets that can help your child learn about hospitals and address their fears.

School age children

A very common fear of school age children is the thought of waking up during surgery and feeling pain. Comfort them by saying that they won’t wake up during the operation, and that when they open their eyes you will be right beside them. They might also think that feeling scared or crying is “babyish,” and will try to keep their emotions to themselves. Let them know that it’s alright for them to tell you how they feel.

Teenagers

Teens usually fear scarring, or a major change to their life. They feel a loss of control over themselves and their world. Be supportive, but don’t lie; false reassurances will only anger them. Letting them talk to the doctor and ask any question will give them a sense of control, and will clear any worries they might have. Encourage them to talk about their feelings with you or their friends.

While taking care of your child, make sure you care for yourself as well. If your child sees that you are losing sleep or feeling stressed, they might feel that it is their fault. Take breaks and eat well, and when necessary say no to some of your obligations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends.

Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma caused by a terrible skiing accident, his management announced.

Moments of awakening

The 45-year-old was discharged from a hospital in Grenoble and will continue his recovery at a rehabilitation facility in Switzerland.

Officials of the rehab confirmed Schumacher was admitted, but did not provide further details citing medical secrecy and family privacy.

“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes,” manager Sabine Kehm said in a statement. “We are sure it helped him. For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”

End of F1 career

While not very popular in the United States outside of racing circles, Schumacher is well-known in Germany as well as other parts of Europe.

His F1 career, however, ended in 2012 since the tragic accident.

Schumacher hit his head on a rock hidden beneath the snow, cracking his helmet.
